Initial Feedback for our Music Video
We asked 25 people in our age group to fill in our short questionnaire about our draft music videos. We gave them the option of giving us feedback for the first and second draft to get a wide range of opinions and feedback. The majority of people surveyed liked our video and recognised the effort that went into producing the video, however, there were a few people who weren't part of the genre that the music video was aimed at, therefore, they didn't like the video as much.
We got lots of positive feedback about several elements of the video including the use of nature, the styling of the artist, the use of bubbles, the happy atmosphere of the video and the different effects. We acknowledge that not everyone shared these opinions however the general consensus was that these elements worked well in the video.
Comments such as "Maybe less outfit changes" have been accounted for in our research and planning as that is the style of music video we chose to create, the majority of people found her styling was interesting and visually exciting. "The mirror shots don't work" was another comment used by a few people and we feel justified in using those effects as it creates a psychedelic feel that matches the song.
The audience noticed backgrounds that we wished to change, showing that the improvements made in our second draft were necessary and suited the video. We feel it is important to gain feedback from our target audience in order to see what effect our video has on them and to gage whether or not our video is successful.

Music Video - SECOND DRAFT
We have changed the shots that we planned to in order to create this draft and we are happy with the outcome. We managed to get the filming we needed done, and the weather stayed sunny and dry. We spent a few hours editing and ensuring the shots were in time with the music.

Evaluation of our Progress
We have made the first draft of our music video and so far we are happy with it. There are only a few shots we are not entirely happy about and we plan to shoot these again, as well as other shots that the feedback indicates we need changing.
We are unhappy with the attic shots as we do not feel it ties in with the theme of our video, therefore we plan to shoot those in an exterior location, similar to the ones also used in our video. After already re-shooting the attic shots once due to incsuffiecient light, we thought these were more imporved and appropraite to use, however when watching them with the rest of the footage, we can see it doesn't look right and doesn't portray the ideas we had for the video. We plan to keep the same outfit for the refilm as we really like the burgandy dress that Rosa-Leigh wears.
We may consider re-shooting the fuzzy & blurred nature shots that we used to create a homemade, vintage effect, to see if they make the video look like a better quality.

When editing the footage we found no major problems arose, and we were able to successfully create our draft before the deadline. Because the footage was on George's iMac we could not edit the footage in school, so we used free periods and after school time to create our video, whilst working on our Digipak's and blogs at school. We found this was actually a good thing as even though we could only edit at home, we managed to get everything else done, and finish the video with days to spare. Editing the video, although fun, was stressful at times because shots we had taken did not look good at first, but with editing and transitions, cutting at appropriate times and coordinating it with the music, we managed to make it work.
We both think that working as a team on this project so far has been beneficial, as the work load has been shared, and time has been spent together editing and working on our joint blog.

Various Locations and Outfits
This video contains various locations and outfits that don't conform to the continuity convention often found in performance videos. However, this video features the artist singing in both exterior and interior shots, with different clothing, make-up and hair styles; something that is simple to do, yet makes the video interesting to watch. We can use this idea within our video as we like the idea of quirky shots (feedback from our audience survey also suggested we used quirky shots) as it makes the video more enjoyable to watch.
Andrew Goodwin: Music Theory
We have created a star image in which the artist communicates the lyrics to the audience, by singing along and looking into the camera; breaking the fourth wall and creating a connection that entices the viewers, making her a storyteller. The voice of the singer is unique, creating a trademark for our artist, so she is recognisable and sets her apart from other artists.
The authenticity of the performance has been created through the intimate shots and the fact when filming, our artist sung along and didn't lip sync, making the performance look credible. As we have changed her outfits in the majority of shots, we have made the video interesting and different, meaning the audience will stay interested and possibly want to watch it a few more times, adhering to the theory of repeatability Goodwin suggested.
Illustrate:
The most illustrative clip used in the music video is the shot where Rosa-Leigh sings with her hands over the eyes, demonstrating the lyrics she is singing.
Amplify:
Nature is used constantly throughout the video, "drumming this into our vision". A vintage effect that matches the tone and subtle lyrics is also used in the video.
Disjuncture:
The lyrics of the song are slightly negative; not making a lot of sense and demonstrating the confusion of a disordered mind, however the melody and beat of the song have happy connotations that make the audience want to dance and hum/sing along. We have focused our video on the happy element of the song, completing ignoring the fact the lyrics are deeper than the happy surface of the beat. The natural shots used contrast with lyrics such as 'There's a demon on the loose' but create a carefree, lighthearted atmosphere for the video.
In post production we will edit some shots to follow the beat of the music, cutting them in time with certain drum beats, creating an interesting effect and capturing the audiences attention with a deviation from longer panning shots.

Claude Levi-Strauss: Narrative Theory
Levi-Strauss however can be linked to our video, as the basic world we are going back to and filming, doesn't represent the modern times, but the primitive societies Levi-Strauss said we shared elements with.
The video's record of nature is similar to the record of nature tribes and more cultural and suburban people are used to, not the modern day businessman.
The binary opposites mentioned in his theory can also be linked to locations and shots used. The natural close up, similar to what we see with our own eyes, contrasted with the post-modern overlaying of moving images, links the normal, conventional shots with the new, modern, digital shots, contrasting a pure form such as nature, with the advanced technology being invented today. Inside and outside society are also being explored through the various exterior and interior shots we plan to use in our video. The interior loft shots are unlike the natural, green exterior shots, making them noticeably opposite.

Hair and Make-up choices
Because we want to achieve a natural style, we plan to use a minimal amount of make-up, much like what Rosa-Leigh is wearing in the picture. To achieve this for our video we can use:
Great lash mascara from Maybelline as it isn't over the top and doesn't promote the 'false lash effect' like other mascaras do. A thin amount of this would darken the eyelashes, and extended them slightly, still making it look natural, although more enhanced.
Even though Rosa-Leigh already has nice, clear skin, if we wanted to highlight certain bits and touch them up, a colour match foundation would be the best thing to choose. It would match the colour of her skin, meaning it wasn't obvious she was wearing any, and no marks or lines around the neck would show because of the two tone colour difference.
Max Factor Infinity Lip Tint is a useful tool because it colours the lips, and the colour lasts for hours. The colour is more subtle than pasting loads of lipstick or lip gloss on, as too much lipstick can look really false and lip gloss makes the mouth too shiny, and too much creates a slimy stringy look. A subtle colour would suit Rosa-Leigh, either the Marshmallow colour or even the Berry Burst.
For both effects we will need to use Hairspray to ensure the hair has volume and stays in the style we choose. An extra strong hold can be used to ensure this happens.
Even though Rosa-Leigh's hair is naturally straight, a pair of straighteners can be used to either define pieces of hair or curl the tips, creating a wavy look. Her straight hair (as demonstrated in the top photo) can be achieved by running the the straighteners
through, holding the hair in place with spray.
L'oreal matt and messy salt spray can also be used, however using too much can make the hair look clumped and wet. Scrunching the hair up and applying some spray adds a tousles messy look to the hair, adding more volume too. This would be a good look for Rosa-Leigh, similar to the photo above.

Audience Profile
We are targeting Rosa-Leighs music towards teenagers that are developing their music tastes in various genres, and are not afraid of listening to new music that might not be popular at the time. They are creative people who are seeking to define themselves using the medium of music, fashion and photography, as well as develop a passion for independent artists, rather than a collective genre; they like variety.
Indie Scenesters
- Dedicated to finding new music
- Broadened music tastes
- Having their own music tastes
- Fans of Youth Lagoon
- Unisex
According to UK tribes, our target audience already has interests in our chosen artist "Youth Lagoon" as the music appeals to their genre of style.
Young Alts
- Open-Minded
- Non-Judgemental
- Immerse themselves in different styles of media
- Individuality
Our artist, Rosa-Leigh will also appeal to our target audience, as her down-to-earth, quirky behaviour is something different from the average female pop star. She really cares about her music, just like the fans do. Her music is different from other things out there, meaning the unusual vibe, lyrics and beat will attract the curiosity of the viewers, quenching their desire to listen to new and unconventional music. People who aren't afraid to develop their music tastes will enjoy the unusual nature of her music, as well as her quirky style. Her outfits and make up will be based on what regular teenagers wear, brands mentioned in both Indie Scenesters and Young Alts, making her attractive to the viewer, giving them something to relate to. Her passion for music and fashion makes her like a regular teenage who fits into these tribes, meaning that she will be more liked than if she was of an opposing tribe, meaning she will be a successful artist and a well-liked singer.
